Joel Edmundson didn’t want to look.
He had blocked a shot from Colorado’s Nail Yakupov on Feb. 8 and his right arm had gone numb. What he didn’t know was that he had a compound fracture of his forearm, with the broken bone coming through his skin.
“The puck was just sitting there, so I just tried to pick it up with my hand and sweep it away, but I couldn’t feel the puck at all underneath my hand so I knew something was wrong then,” the Blues defenseman said Tuesday.
He finished the shift, skated to the bench and, after a while, his arm was still numb. Something was definitely wrong.
“It was on the other side of my arm so I really couldn’t even see it,” he said. “My arm felt numb and it was pretty painful, but I wasn’t sure what it looked like at the time. I didn’t really want to look. I felt like I might have passed out.
“I felt a lot. I didn’t hear anything. I’ve blocked lots of shots off my arm. This one just made my arm numb. I wasn’t sure if it was broken, I had no idea what happened. I went back to the bench, sat out a couple shifts and the pain didn’t go away so I figured I should get it X rayed. I wanted to get back out there.”
Edmundson didn’t get back out there, but less than a month later, he’s very close to being back. He had his second day of practice with the team Tuesday and he was a full participant, meaning that the team’s medical staff feels the bone, which is held together with a plate, is healed. Now it’s a matter of getting strength back in the arm to do everything he needs to do on the ice.
“I’m hoping it’s sooner rather than later,” he said.
How soon? The Blues play again Thursday in San Jose, then Saturday in Los Angeles and Monday in Anaheim in a three game trip that looms large for their playoff hopes. A return for one of those games, which would be two weeks ahead of schedule, seems possible.
• BLUES TALK Sound off about The Note s playoff chances
“Just wake up in the morning and see how I feel,” Edmundson said. “We’ll just take it day by day. Over the next week, we’ll see how I feel. There’s no rush, but I definitely want to get back out there and I want to help the team out.
“I could have a good day and you never know. If one of our ‘D’ go down, I may have to get in. I’m feeling pretty good on the ice right now Jake Allen Jersey, but it’s just practice. There’s a couple of things I still want to work on before I get back in the game. Just make sure my conditioning’s back up there, too. Just make sure I’m 100 percent before I step back on the ice.”
If Edmundson’s return is possible, it also may be essential. The Blues won the first game after he got hurt, then lost seven in a row and eight of nine to move out of the top eight in the Western Conference. There’s not much room to maneuver right now. If Edmundson is cleared to play and feels ready to go, he’ll play.
“We’re at a point in our season where it’s desperation mode https://www.slbluesfans.com/vince-dunn-jersey-c-10.html,” Yeo said. “We can’t sit around and try to save somebody for the playoffs because that’s not going to be there for us unless we start winning games here.”
The Blues need him because their defense fell apart without him, in one stretch allowing 16 goals in three games. Teams have been able to set up shop in front of the Blues’ net, an area Edmundson usually helps keep clear.
“He’s obviously a very physical player,” Yeo said. “He’s going to make guys pay a price when they go there. He’s a guy that I find has sort of a sneaky composure in terms of how he executes https://www.slbluesfans.com/carl-gunnarsson-jersey-c-8.html, how he moves the puck out of our zone, we spend less time because of that. We also spend less time defending in our own zone because he breaks plays up quickly, whether it’s his physical nature and the way he separates people from the puck or whether it’s gap control and his stick and his range.”
Edmundson thinks he needs some more contact on the ice and some strength in his wrist for shooting. While he was taking shots in practice Tuesday, he never really let one rip.
“The strength isn’t there yet, there’s still a bit of pain,” he said. “I can fight through pain, but just the strength is lacking . The more shots I take, I feel like the better I’ll get. I think over the next week it’ll come.
“The doctor said it’s as sturdy as ever so we don’t have to worry about that. It’s just getting the strength back and making sure the muscle’s there and we’re all good.”
As soon as he can, he’ll be out there. Fellow defenseman Colton Parayko was marveling about Edmundson finishing a shift with a broken arm. “Impressive, that’s for sure,” Parayko said.
“You want to be smart about it,” Edmundson said. “Obviously I want to get out there as fast as I can, but at the same time, it’s a serious injury so I want to make sure before I step on the ice into a game and make sure I can compete in the battles like I used to. For right now, I’m just working on my shots and we’ll ramp it up and get into battle practices and I think I’ll be good to go.”
The Sharks came to life a tad too late Sunday night as they suffered their first loss since they acquired Evander Kane at the NHL’s trade deadline.
Kane and Joonas Donskoi both scored at even strength, but the Sharks got nothing from their power play for the 12th straight game and could not make up for a lackluster opening 20 minutes in a 4 2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at SAP Center.
The Sharks trailed 3 0 by the 5 32 mark of the second period on three even strength goals by Columbus, and never fully recovered despite some improved play as the game progressed.

“There was never a moment where we felt out of the game,” Sharks captain Joe Pavelski said. “It never felt like it was out of reach. The guys in our group showed it and came back and gave ourselves a chance. Definitely, down 3 0, and at the end of the night, that was what cost us.”
Sharks goalie Martin Jones was pulled after he allowed three goals on 13 shots, although he had almost no chance on at least two of them.
Still, after Artemi Panarin’s goal gave the Blue Jackets a three goal cushion, Jones was removed in favor of Aaron Dell as Sharks coach Pete DeBoer searched for anything to light a fire under his team. “That’s one way to grab their attention or settle ourselves down,” DeBoer said. “Unfortunately for Jones , he was the victim of that tonight. It wasn’t anything that he did in the net.”
The Sharks didn’t create much until the final two minutes of the second, when Dylan DeMelo’s shot from just inside the blue line was redirected by Donskoi past Bobrovsky at the 18 22 mark to cut Columbus’ lead to 3 1.
“I don’t think we had the same level of urgency as they did,” Kane said. “The last five minutes of the second was when we really started to get into the game, Donskoi getting a big one there and I thought it carried over well into the third period. But anytime you get down three goals https://www.sharkssjfans.com/dylan-demelo-jersey-c-8.html, it’s tough.” Kane scored his first goal with the Sharks and his 21st of the season at the 10 04 mark of the third, taking a pass from Pavelski and beating Bobrovsky with a wrist shot that squeezed through his pads. The Sharks pressed for the equalizer, but Panarin sealed the win with an empty net goal in the final minute of regulation time.
Kane also assisted on Donskoi’s goal, as that line with Donskoi and Pavelski now has a combined 16 points in three games since Kane was brought over from the Buffalo Sabres on Feb. 26.
“There’s been a lot of space, there’s been a lot entries where we’re coming in together,” Pavelski said of his line. “We’ve just been in synch. It’s not been one guy leading it. It’s been Donskoi driving it in with Kane . We’ve been taking the puck to the net, haven’t been messing around with it too much.”
The Sharks didn’t have a problem getting past Edmonton and Chicago to start their homestand. While the power play continued to struggle, even strength goals were coming by the bushel.
With less room to skate against a defensive minded Blue Jackets team, the 5 on 5 scoring could only do so much Sunday, and the Sharks’ power play futility continues to set team records.
The power play looked dangerous at times, and Bobrovsky made eight saves when the Blue Jackets were down a man.
Still, the Sharks’ four misfires against Columbus extended their goalless streak with the man advantage to a franchise record 12 games Marc-Edouard Vlasic Jersey, going 0 for 28 in that time. San Jose’s last power play goal came Feb. 8 against the Vegas Golden Knights. “You’ve got to give the goalie on the other team some credit,” DeBoer said. “I’ll be the first guy to stand here if we can’t get into the zone or we can’t get set up. You’ve got to look at it realistically. We generated some real quality looks. We missed the net on some and he made some saves on some.” “We understand that we have to keep going and find ways to get it back https://www.sharkssjfans.com/justin-braun-jersey-c-10.html,” Pavelski said of the power play.
The worst part for the Sharks was that Columbus scored quickly after two first period power plays fizzled out.
Nick Foligno scored at the 9 12 mark of the first https://www.sharkssjfans.com/brent-burns-jersey-c-9.html, 10 seconds after his hooking penalty expired. Then Panarin scored 54 seconds after Zach Werenski left the box on another hooking call.
The Sharks entered Sunday’s game 10 points back of Vegas for first place in the Pacific Division, and are now one point ahead of Anaheim for second place. The Sharks’ homestand continues Thursday against St. Louis.
The St. Louis Blues will try to maintain their recent success in their division rival’s building when they visit the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday night at the United Center.
St. Louis 38 28 5 has earned at least one point in six of its previous eight visits to Chicago. The Blues will play the Blackhawks three times in their final 11 games of the regular season.
Blues coach Mike Yeo knows that his players need to be sharp for any chance at making the postseason. Yeo’s team is coming off a 4 3 overtime victory against the New York Rangers on Saturday night, but remains on the outside looking in when it comes to the Western Conference playoff race.
“I still feel confident, yeah,” Yeo said earlier this week to the St. Louis Post Dispatch. “We’re showing that we’ve got fight in our room right now. I know you don’t get points for playing hard , but what it does, it gives me confidence that this is a group that’s going to be ready to respond.”
St. Louis, which won Saturday on a Brayden Schenn goal, might have to do so without star forward Vladimir Tarasenko, who was forced to leave Saturday’s game because of an upper body injury. The 26 year old has 58 points 27 goals https://www.blackhawkschifans.com/michal-rozsival-jersey-c-5.html, 31 assists in 71 games this season.
Meanwhile, Chicago 30 34 8 is playing for pride with 10 games to go in a lost season.
The Blackhawks are in last place in the Western Conference’s Central Division and have dropped four of their past five games after absorbing a 5 3 loss at Buffalo on Saturday.
The Blackhawks have struggled to find consistent success in net during the extended absence of top goaltender Corey Crawford https://www.blackhawkschifans.com/connor-murphy-jersey-c-7.html, who has been sidelined since late December by an undisclosed upper body injury. Backup options Anton Forsberg and Jean Francois Berube have split the workload as of late. Forsberg https://www.blackhawkschifans.com/michal-kempny-jersey-c-8.html, 25, is 9 15 3 with a 3.04 goals against average and a .905 save percentage in his first season in Chicago. The native of Sweden has yet to face the Blues in his career.
Berube, 26, is 2 4 0 with a 3.55 goals against average and a .900 save percentage. He opposed the Blues once in a relief role, stopping all six shots he faced in 17 53 of fill in duty.
“It’s not an easy job for the other guys to come in and expect to be Crawford , but we still think we had stretches when our goaltending hasn’t been a problem Jordan Oesterle Jersey,” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said to the Chicago Tribune. “Right now, it could be a little better, but we’re not complaining.”
The Blues could turn to Jake Allen in net for the second time in as many days after he stopped 17 shots against the Rangers. Allen is 7 4 1 with a 2.29 GAA and .924 save percentage in 12 career games against the Blackhawks.
If Yeo chooses to rest Allen, goaltender Ville Husso could make his NHL debut. The Blues promoted Husso from San Antonio of the AHL last week. The 23 year old boasted a .927 save percentage in the minors.
The Blackhawks are 17 15 3 at home this season. The Blues are 17 13 5 on the road.
In last year s Eastern Conference final, the Penguins and Ottawa Senators were separated by one goal specifically, the goal netted by Chris Kunitz at 5 09 of the second overtime in Game 7 that gave Pittsburgh a 3 2 win.
But the Pens and Sens played differently, and still do.
The Penguins play wide open hockey, a style that takes some risks. The Senators employ a 1 3 1 trap, preferring to lock down the neutral zone. Whatever fits a team s personnel is what works best, as evidenced by the tight nature of the teams playoff series last spring.
But when a player goes from one style to the other, significant adjustment can be required.
I m going to give myself a couple more weeks just to get to know everyone, and to try to feel comfortable out there, making plays https://www.penguinspitfans.com/tom-sestito-jersey-c-13.html, said Brassard. So I can go into the playoffs and be confident and good for the team.
Brassard confirmed the difference between the methodology in Ottawa and Pittsburgh.
Oh, yeah, big time, Brassard said. In Ottawa, it was more like a defensive minded kind of system. Now, I m still trying to tell myself every shift that I have to make plays, I have to move my feet.
In Ottawa, we always wanted numbers back. We never gave any odd man breaks to the other team. So I was spending most of my time defending.
I know this team very well. I played against them in the playoffs the last four years, Brassard said. I know they play a high paced game, with a lot of good skaters and a lot of skill.
Brassard was acquired to center Phil Kessel. Brassard is also very familiar with the Penguins No. 81.
I grew up playing against [Kessel]. We re the same age, said Brassard, 30. He was always one of the most dominant players out there, with his speed and shot. It s kind of funny how it goes sometimes a couple years later, we re on the same team and playing on the same line.
Skating with a finisher like Kessel is making Brassard adjust even more.
A few games ago, I was trying to find [Kessel] a little too much, Brassard said March 9, a day before the Penguins lost at Toronto 5 2. In Ottawa https://www.penguinspitfans.com/bryan-rust-jersey-c-14.html, I was sometimes finishing games with 7, 8, 9 shots on net.
I still have to shoot the puck. Maybe sometimes you re not going to score on the first one, but it creates momentum for your team and more opportunities for your teammates.
Brassard is very aware that giving the puck to Kessel quite often means getting it back.
If Phil is open, obviously I m going to try to find him, said Brassard. But he s a really good passer in the offensive zone. People think he s a shooter, but I don t think he gets enough credit for the vision that he has, or the skills. He s just a great player.
Brassard is impressed by the Penguins everyday work ethic.
It s just fun to see these guys and what they do every day, the way they prepare, said the native of Hull, Quebec. What Geno [Malkin] does, Sid [Crosby], Kris [Letang], all the top players it s fun to just look at them and see how they prepare. I can see why they won two Cups in a row.
Brassard had a goal and two assists in his first eight games as a Penguin. He had 18 goals and 20 assists in 58 games with Ottawa this season.
